Meadows Museum – Case Study

Meadows Museum Dallas

More Than a Vendor

How a Long-Term Partnership Powers A World-Class Art Museum

The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University houses one of the finest Spanish art collections outside of Spain, competing on the world stage with institutions like the Prado and National Gallery. The museum operates with just 16 professional staff members and not a single in-house art handler.

For Anne Lenhart, Director of Collections and Exhibitions, this reality means that every work of art that moves through the museum, and across the entire SMU campus, depends on contracted services. Her 20,000 square feet of exhibition space rotates twice annually, coordinating loans to institutions like the Louvre, and overseeing everything from 3,000-pound sculptures to delicate centuries-old porcelain. For Lenhart and her team, this requires partners she can trust implicitly.

“The vendor relationships I have are my most important professional relationships. At times, they’re more important than the relationships I have with my co-workers because I have to be able to call Unified Fine Arts at 6 a.m. on a Monday and say, ‘This thing came up, and I don’t have anyone.’ How quickly can you get here? How do we make this work? The best part is. . . they show up and make it happen. “

A Partnership Built on Trust

The Meadows Museum was one of Unified Fine Arts’ first regular clients when the company began, and the relationship has never wavered. What began as a vendor relationship has evolved into something far more valuable: a true extension of the museum’s team.

Anne and the assistant registrar manage every aspect of the museum’s collection operations. Without in-house art handlers, they rely on Unified for crating, transportation, rigging, installation, mount fabrication, and storage. But the relationship goes deeper than transactional service delivery. The Unified team regularly conducts site visits to brainstorm solutions and provides unparalleled expertise, the type that Lenhart knows she won’t find anywhere else.

“They are, without question, my closest colleagues because they are the ones who help me brainstorm solutions to our challenges. How are we going to work through this? What is the possibility? We do a lot more collegial brainstorming than you might normally find within a museum because we are so reliant on them for everything.”

Quality Over Cost

Anne is candid about the value proposition. She knows she could find other vendors to do the work, perhaps at a lower initial rate, but experience has taught her that cutting corners on art handling is a false economy.

The museum receives regular approaches from competing vendors eager to win their business. These companies see an attractive client: a well-funded museum with substantial art handling needs. But exploring alternatives isn’t even a consideration for Anne.

“I could save a few dollars an hour by using another company, but based on experience, I would have to call Unified to come and fix it afterwards. So, the cost that I would save initially, I would either lose by having to micromanage those crews or lose by having to have the Unified team come in and clean up.”

The Unified Difference

What makes the relationship work isn’t just technical expertise, though Unified delivers that consistently. It’s the operational philosophy that matches the museum’s needs. With minimal administrative bandwidth, Lenhart needs partners who understand the handshake culture of the Texas art community, who don’t require 12-page contracts just to assess a project, and who can respond immediately when unexpected situations arise.

“We get courted a lot, and it just continues to not even be a debate from my end. I don’t even let people take me to lunch. It’s not worth my time, because I know I have the best with Unified Fine Arts.”

The stability of Unified’s team means familiar and trusted faces who understand the Meadows’ collection, can work unsupervised in the museum’s spaces, and bring institutional knowledge and expertise to every project.

“Unified continues to offer the highest caliber of service with the least amount of administrative burden. This is the most important relationship and I can’t ask for anything else.”
